Maputaland Introduction

Overview

This undiscovered paradise offers diverse and some unique tourism activities and attractions in a fabulous subtropical climate.

Maputaland is a part of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal, that is tucked in between Swaziland, Mozambique, and the endless white beaches of the warm Indian Ocean coast. It is a vast remote and magical place of shimmering lakes, forests, bush and pristine seashore.

The area is only accessible on foot, on horseback or with 4X4 vehicles and therfore it is sheltered from mass tourism and major human intrusion.

The northern part of Maputaland, is without conventional electricity and water supply. Here you can experience the rich “real life” African tribal culture that is unaffected by modern world or industry.

Kosi Bay Lakes and Indian Ocean

The Kosi Mouth

"This is where the roads end".

"It is one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas left in the world.”

Maputaland includes along its coast places like Sodwana Bay (also known as Jesser Point) in the south, Lake Sibaya, Mabibi, Lalanek, Rocktail Bay, Black Rock, Dog Point, Bhanga Nek, the Kosi Lake sytem, and Kosi Mouth as the most northern point.

The main town in Maputaland is called Kosi Bay. This is a misnomer because there is no bay and the town known as Kosi Bay is still 30 km from the coast. Kosi Bay is also known as Manguzi situated in the KwaNgwanase district. The region is marketed as the Elephant Coast.

It is the land of the Thonga Tembe people. It received UNESCO World Heritage Site Status in the year 2000.
